Tom Evans Audio Design

Tom Evans phono preamp (detail) "Tom who?" I hear you ask! If you're not a UK audiophile, and even if you are, if you don't delve behind some of the more famous products, you could be forgiven for not having heard of him.

Tom Evans is an innovator in amplification and digital electronics, but like many similar folk, does not normally put his name on what he makes. But, he's had enough of hiding behind other brands.

And Walrus (or rather Head Walruses Les and Pete) have known Tom for many, many years, and are proud to be one of the first outlets to stock his "own brand" product.

A brief history ...

Tom's first product was the Finestra preamplifier from 1986/87, a partly perspex encased unit which never became widely known, but sounded very good.
Following on from this, Tom designed the famous Iso phono amplifier, manufactured and sold by Michell Engineering. This was very successful, and was followed by the Argo line preamp, and HR ("high resolution") versions of both.
Tom then developed the Trichord CD precision clock to fit to other manufacturer's CD players, and also the stand-alone Trichord DAC.
He's now come round full circle and has used all his previous experience to produce the T.E.A.D. Groove phono amplifier, which is set to become a classic.
The highest accolade, is that some of the initial production run is already pre-ordered by no less than hi-fi reviewers who were so impressed by the review sample that they had to put their money where their mouth was!

The basic design builds on the Iso HR circuitry, but that's where the similarity ends. One complete amplifier board is used per channel sandwiched between two copper plated shielding boards. The components used are the very latest high specification devices in the usual Tom Evans configurations, and the whole amplifier is fed from hand-built discrete power supply regulators (Lithos), fed by miniature mains transformers, one for each channel.
Even though the unit is (as usual) encased in Perspex, due to the considerable shielding there is very little susceptability to hum pickup, so placement is not a problem.

I know other sites do this routinely, but we usually do a bit better than this. Sorry!
